A MEETING WITH THE MAYOR November 2022
FROM ALFREDO CENTOLA, WE LOVE WHITESTONE PRESIDENT
About a month ago, I had the privilege of being invited to the Mayors Crime meeting in Forest Hills. There was a monsoon rain, traffic was a nightmare and parking was nonexistent. I was about to turn back when a spot opened up. I parked, walked in and found my seat with Jennifer Shannon of A Better College Point Civic. We had a round table discussion with a member of the Mayors community affairs team. We discussed our concerns and each table presented our concerns. In the middle of presenting there was a back and forth and the Mayor promised me he would come to Whitestone in order to discuss the communities concerns regarding safety.
Yesterday , the Mayor kept his promise and came with Deputy Mayor Banks along with his team. Councilwoman Paladino, Community board 7 members , Jennifer Shannon, Robert LoScalzo and I had a candid round table discussion with the Mayor and his team. We presented and discussed all of our issues and concerns, from major upticks in crime to approved developments what will further strain the current overburdened 109. The Mayor listened, asked pointed questions and promised to work with us to address our concerns. Our main objective was a new precinct to cover Whitestone, College Point and Bay Terrace. Locations discussed were the Police Academy and Fort Totten in order to help the NYPD better serve their communities.
This was an excellent start and hopefully the beginning of meaningful changes.
I urge each and every single one of you to call or contact your state representatives and tell them they need to fix the system. Bail reform needs to be edited and tweaked. We need our state legislatures to support.
Our elected state representatives have sent a letter asking for a new precinct, now we need them to put money where mouths are, as well step to the plate and fix the broken systems starting with bail reform and raise the age.
This was a first step, we promise to keep on the issue and keep you updated.
Statements were made about living in realities, and while I don’t disagree, we also have to be proactive instead of the perpetual “reactive”.
As always “GET UP, GET OUT, GET INVOLVED!!!”
